I Want To Hear Poetry That...
by Tim Holmes

I want to hear poetry that...
Wears its heart on its sleeve
Is as honest as a baby's cry, but in some ways more naïve
That doesn't require any lateral thinking to work out what it means
Is straight to the point
Blunt as a brick, not trying to be part of a scene

I want to hear poetry that...
Tears through the fabrication of reality
Is lucid and well meaning, woven with words of clarity
Which speaks of something that can't be said
Of feelings that can't be expressed
With contradictions that negate themselves
That you think with your heart but feel with your head

I want to hear poetry that questions the roots of oppression
And... weighs upon the brain like a bad case of compression.
That's eloquent and thoughtful, not easily deceived
That's open to suggestion and never preconceives

I want to hear poetry that is cooling salve on broken sores
That slips gently past the listeners ears and is soaked up through the pores
That's written by gods and spoken by angels
I want to hear poetry that can be shared, like jokes, at after dinner tables

I want to hear poetry...
That repeats itself, and in that repetition
Turns gently in upon itself and forces recognition

I want to hear poetry...
That gives the universal sign of the thumbs up
Conveys the message that everything is OK
That the problems of now are the history of then
I want to hear poetry that savours each brand new day

I want to hear poetry that's uncomplicated
That says what it believes
And, when the poem's over, gives a humble bow and leaves.
