Image of a battered young woman
Release Yourself by Alain English

I saw him punch you in the face
It made an ugly sound

He smashed your head against the wall
And threw you to the ground

He stamped and kicked upon your head
As you lay on the floor

He spat and cursed and called you names
He labelled you a whore

Despite this nasty beating
From a man you call a lover

You wouldn't put him in his place
And leave him for another

You took the easy option
Became his girl again

Believed him when he told you
That his fisticuffs would end

Now he seems a man of confidence
Of power and security

A man who could protect you
And offer you security

He could give you money, food and clothes
A home to lay your head

He's unpredictable, exciting
And really good in bed

But all these things about him
The good things that attract you

Are the very things that give him power
And permission to attack you

For you are just a toy to him
A trophy, a possession

A desire to control you
His dominant obsession

Your bright ideas, thoughts and feelings
Matter not to him

You're only there to serve his needs
Obey his every whim

But you can break this vicious cycle
Learn how to be stronger

And stop the sordid, brutal beatings
From going on much longer

To break the cycle isn't easy
It's hard and it is tough

But you can tell him where to go
And say enough's enough!

You don't need to subordinate
Yourself to men like he

Cut the bonds that bind you to him
Release yourself, be free!
